Stretch Marks & Cellulite

Stretch marks and cellulite are a natural physical effect which usually comes from genetics, hormones, age, pregnancy and lifestyle. Rapid weight gain and muscle tone also affect if you have cellulite, even fit people can have it!

As fat cells increase in the body, they push up against the skin.  It involves fibrous connective cords pulling the skin to the muscle lying under, with the fat lying in between. This creates an uneven surface or dimpling effect on the skin texture, also referred to as cellulite. Having cellulite is a common and harmless skin condition that is usually spotted on the thighs, hips, buttocks and abdomen areas.

While cellulite is common with age when the skin loses elasticity, it is much more common in women than in men. Most women develop some cellulite after puberty because their fat is typically distributed in the thighs, hips and buttocks — common areas for cellulite.

Cellulite and stretch marks work hand in hand. Stretch marks, as the name suggests, occurs when the skin stretches. They look like long rope-like lines of discolouration on the top layer of your skin. They are typically indented and usually noticeable. They start out being red or purple and fade over time to a white colour.

Stretch marks happen when our bodies go through a rapid change, the fibres in our skin slowly stretch to adapt.—whether it is with pregnant women, teenagers or those who have massive weight fluctuations (weight gain or weight loss). This may cause the middle layer of the skin to tear, leading to scarring.

Generally, to treat stretch marks and cellulite, collagen production must be stimulated to allow the connective tissue in the skin to repair itself, producing tighter skin. To get rid of cellulite and reduce stretch marks, there are cellulite creams you can put on your problem areas to stimulate the production of collagen and reduce the appearance of cellulite on the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes stretch marks?
Stretch marks form below the skin’s surface when your skin either grows or shrinks too quickly. This causes the two proteins in the skin, collagen and elastin, to break down and create indentations in the skin.
What causes cellulite?
Cellulite happens from the deposition of fat cells. This could come from the lack of exercise and having a healthy diet. Genetics and hormones may also play a part in the formation of cellulite.
Why do women get cellulite more frequently than men?
Women have a higher percentage of body fat and therefore have a greater chance of developing cellulite than men do.
